Do you use the same login/shell group as you specified at Oracle link
time?

this is excatly what i've done but : the instance is called orcl. this
was
running on the server. from client it works fine

linuxone:/opt/oracle/product/9ir2/dbs # orapwd
file=$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/orapworcl password=manager
linuxone:/opt/oracle/product/9ir2/dbs # sqlplus /nolog
